Duke Street, leading off the western end of busy Oxford Street, provides a mixture of local restaurants, cafés and amenities. The present day appearance of Duke Street dates almost entirely from the general rebuilding undertaken in this district between 1886 and 1896.
The vision for the street is to create a break-out area and oasis for Oxford Street, offering quality restaurants and shops for both visitors and locals alike. The public realm plans for the area include the transformation of Brownhart Gardens and the pavillion area above the EDF substation. The plan is to improve the deck, incorporating a café and garden, in order for it to be open for public use and for events. The Duke Street development will allow provision of higher-end restaurants and the opening of a boutique hotel at 8 Balderton Street will change the tone of the area.
