Grosvenor Americas unveils mixed-use community in Silver Spring

Grosvenor Americas has celebrated the groundbreaking and unveiling ceremony of Central, a new mixed-use community in downtown Silver Spring with County Executives and local elected officials.

21st September 2015

Grosvenor Americas (Grosvenor), celebrated on the 9th of September with Montgomery County Executive Isiah “Ike” Leggett, former Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan and local elected officials of the groundbreaking and unveiling ceremony of Central, a new mixed-use community at 8455 Fenton Street in downtown Silver Spring. Central will be built on the former site of the historic First Baptist Church that is across from the Silver Spring Library. A time capsule that was buried in a cornerstone in 1950 was opened at the ceremony. Officials at the event filled a new time capsule with carefully selected items from the surrounding community.

The site is being transformed into a 231,000-square-foot, 243-apartment mixed-use community with 16,000 square feet of ground floor retail space. Thirty-one of the homes are designated as affordable. Delivering Fall 2017, Central residents will benefit from a 24-hour full-service concierge and will enjoy amenities such as an outdoor pool, rooftop lounge and entertainment spaces, a fully equipped gym, pet wash-facility, bike workshop, and wifi café. Grosvenor will construct a new church building and daycare center for the First Baptist Church on an adjacent property.

“Central encapsulates Grosvenor’s Living cities approach, in which we seek to unlock potential in the communities where we are active, embracing the surrounding environment and enhancing it for decades forward,” said Don Capobres, Senior Vice President, Development at Grosvenor Americas. “We are proud to have had such strong support from the County and the First Baptist Church, who have both played essential roles in bringing Central to fruition.”

“With the recent grand opening of the new Silver Spring Library, Central continues the inclusive economic development we have been seeing in downtown Silver Spring,” said Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett. “This development is a prime example of the public and private sectors – as well as members of the community – coming together to create something that is both economically viable and mutually beneficial.”

Located in the heart of downtown Silver Spring, Central is two blocks from an amenity-rich neighbourhood that includes a renovated mall, an independent movie theatre, a popular music venue, and countless retail and restaurant options and new civic space including the new public library across the street, where a stop for the planned Purple Line of the Metro system has been designated. Planned ground floor retail at Central will also include outdoor seating along the sidewalks of Wayne Avenue, Fenton Street and Bonifant Street.

In addition to the nearby retail offerings, the community also features a public art fixture entitled “Wingspire,” designed by William Cochran, which will be a lit-glass structure. Grosvenor first collaborated with William Cochran Studios in the creation of Pillar of Fire, set outside of District Apartments on 14th Street in Washington, D.C.

Earlier this year, Grosvenor broke-ground on F1RST, their 450,000-square-foot mixed-use residential development in the Capitol Riverfront District.
