The new community garden will be created on currently uncultivated land to the south of the existing allotments and will incorporate features that will encourage healthier lifestyles (both through exercise and outdoor community activities), in line with the development being awarded NHS Healthy New Town status earlier this year.
Key features include natural play areas, trim trail equipment and cycle routes linking the garden to the wider network of open spaces in Oxford. Picnic benches within the garden will also provide opportunities for increased social interaction.
Existing landscape features such as the avenue of mature apple trees will be enhanced, while new fruiting trees and hedgerows, wildflower meadows and native shrub planting aim to increase biodiversity. The approved proposals also include improvements to the existing allotments and outbuilding.
The proposals will complement the other community spaces and informal recreational areas to be provided in the linear park and greenways and will help to enhance important community connections with the existing Barton community.
Following the decision, Alex Robinson, Project Director at Grosvenor, speaking on behalf of the Barton LLP, said: “We welcome Oxford City Council’s decision in granting planning consent for improvements to the allotments and the creation of a community garden at Barton Park. Alongside the improvements to existing allotments, it will create an important green link between the existing and new Barton Park communities and will help progress our plans for creating a healthy neighbourhood.”
Barton Park is located to the north east of Oxford and close to the A40, with excellent links to Oxford city centre which is just a 20 minute cycle ride away and within close access of the new Oxford Parkway railway station, which has direct services to London Marylebone.
Key features of the recently-named ‘NHS Healthy New Town’ include 885 new homes, as well as a new primary school, food convenience store, two children’s play areas, communal gardens and allotments and a new junction onto the A40. A brand new community hub is planned, incorporating a new primary school and the newly approved sports facilities.
A new linear park introduces a landscaped green space alongside Bayswater Brook, including ponds with platforms, bridges, a boardwalk through existing trees on the site, and a jogging trail with fitness stations.
The first phase of 237 homes at Barton Park will be built by Hill Residential, who is expected to begin on site later this year. 40% of the homes will be designated affordable.
