The 4,000 sq.ft. store is located in the Venator Building at 230 8th Avenue SW. The 25,000-square-foot heritage building, located in the city’s historic district, Stephen Avenue Walk, was constructed in 1920 and Grosvenor has owned it since 2005.
The store is a hyper-condensed version of what consumers would typically find at the Canadian-owned iconic retailer, with a full-service pharmacy, two customer service specialist desks and full- service ship-to-store pick up for everything available at www.LondonDrugs.com.
Located along the +15 pedestrian skywalk system, the Venator Building has direct interior access to Scotia Centre, which draws significant pedestrian traffic. The corridor’s renewed retail node comprises The Core, Fashion Central, Scotia Centre and Hudson’s Bay.
Glenn Barrick, senior vice president, Investment, Grosvenor Americas said: “We’re excited that London Drugs, Canada’s preeminent privately-owned drugstore retailer, has chosen our heritage Venator Building as the location for its first LDEXPRESS store. Stephen Avenue is Calgary’s leading high-street, making it an ideal place to introduce a new, compact concept store suited to Calgary’s office and urban residential customers.”
Stephen Avenue is home to numerous eateries, wine-bars and notable retailers that add to the area’s vibrancy. It is a designated National Historic Site of Canada and includes approximately 36 buildings constructed in the Sandstone Era from 1880-1930. Stephen Avenue is open to vehicles only from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
“LDEXPRESS on Stephen Avenue is here to cater to consumers who are time-starved but who also desire high-quality products and personalized customer care which they know they can count on from London Drugs,” said Clint Mahlman, executive vice president and chief operating officer.
On the reason to open the first-ever LDEXPRESS in Calgary, Mr. Mahlman said, “The decision to open on Stephen Avenue was based on a number of factors. Stephen Avenue was the first location in a Western Canadian city that matched our specific criteria as well as the City of Calgary and the Landlord (Grosvenor) had a “can do” approach to making this opportunity happen.”
The Venator Building is also home to SAIT Polytechnic’s Culinary Campus, which draws traffic to the street front and offers a selection of daily fresh cuisine to downtown’s working professionals.
Grosvenor has been invested in Calgary since the early 1990’s. Today, it has C$93.9M in assets under management in Calgary, with recently completed and ongoing residential developments in the Beltline and West End worth C$94.4M.
