The relaunch of the iconic seafood restaurant Scott’s in 2007, refurbishment of the Connaught hotel and opening of American fashion designer Marc Jacobs’ flagship store began a new look for Mount Street attracting some of the biggest fashion talents of the 21st century.
Mount Street's unique retail offer includes fashion houses Balenciaga, Celine Lanvin, Christopher Kane and Oscar de la Renta, jewellers Solange Azagury-Partridge and watchmaker Richard Mille. We have carefully managed the retail mix to keep Mount Street’s distinctive character, with newer brands sitting alongside long-established quintessentially English retailers such as gunmaker James Purdey, luxury goods seller William & Son and Allen’s, one of London’s best-known butchers.
Mount Street’s name comes from Mount Field, which included Oliver’s Mount, the remains of fortifications erected during the English civil war. The original street was built in the 1700s. In the late 1800s, with many leases approaching expiry, the first Duke rebuilt the street with the intricately detailed Queen Anne revival style architecture that can still be seen today.
In 2010 we completed a programme of public realm improvements to enhance the look and access to the street. We used high quality surfacing materials on pavements, strengthened the physical and visual links to surrounding green spaces, including Mount Street Gardens, and improved the environment at Carlos Place opposite the Connaught hotel. As part of the works, with the Connaught hotel, we commissioned the Japanese architect Tadao Ando to create the water feature 'Silence' now situated on Carlos Place. The work on Mount Street is part of a swathe of public realm improvements in key locations across our estate.
On 27 April, award winning journalist Marianne Jones and a panel of retail experts will discuss how meaningful retail partnerships work in practice and predicted consumer trends for 2022.
