Yasmin's story

New skills, new confidence, new community

"I have learnt how to put a pocket in trousers, shorten trousers and make bags. I am so thankful to Grosvenor Hart Homes for providing such opportunity."

– Yasmin

Yasmin moved to the UK from Afghanistan in 2021 with her husband and three young children. In 2024, they settled into a Grosvenor Hart Homes (GHH) home. Yasmin dreamed of working and integrating into her community, but language barriers made her feel isolated.

GHH opened doors: Yasmin joined community events, hosted a tenant gathering with Afghan cuisine, and connected with a career mentor who understood her challenges.

Her passion for sewing became a pathway forward. We arranged local classes, secured a donated sewing machine, and supported Yasmin to attend ESOL sessions where a volunteer spoke her dialect.

With encouragement, Yasmin grew confident enough to attend independently. Her English improved –she can now greet and hold conversations – and she demonstrated tailoring skills to local employers, earning a job offer.

Yasmin and her family are active members of the GHH community, frequently engaging in sessions delivered by us including STEM workshops and festive parties. This increased sense of belonging is enabling Yasmin to build confidence, friendships, and a future filled with possibility.
